Nagib Nahas: Virtual Portfolio

About the Work

I try to express the light of a subject through solid masses of color. A clear light that segregates forms into bright and shadowed aspects is my main representational topic. The attempt to convey its temperature and radiance through equivalent qualities of color is my main formal concern.

I draw for color, seeking the boundaries of masses in order to state them as shapes that depict the simplified planes of illuminated volumes in space. The specificity of an image, however, is not based in the precision of these boundaries but in the chromatic calibration of the painted masses and in their interactions. When these interactions are harmonious and appropriate to the subject, the image appears vibrant and its light convincing.

The synthesis of these two qualities, chromatic vividness and representational plausibility, is the objective effect that I aim for in my work. It is not that I avoid subjective or symbolic associations, only that such expressions are not part of my intentional motive. I am esentially trying to arrive at pictorial equivalents of the experience of radiance as a perceptual subject.
